Although Mounted Archery is a very new organized equestrian sport in South Africa, it already caught root with interested parties a couple of years ago.

Daniel Griffin, from Bredasdorp in the Western Cape, was arguably one of the first practitioners of mounted archery in South Africa. Back in 2011, Daniel started a school, Griffins Mounted Archery Training Centre, on his property close to Bredasdorp. He has competed internationally in several tournaments as well as taking part in local demonstrations.

Initially an association was put forward, the South African Horse Archery Association (SAHAA). Due to the difficulties associated with the establishment of, and participation in the sport, SAHAA was never affiliated to any official sport bodies or federations and thus stagnated due to a lack of support.

Over time other interested parties started practicing mounted archery and eventually this led to the establishment of the first official mounted archery club in South Africa, Mounted Archery Pretoria. This club saw the light due to the pioneering work of Johan de Bruto and Jaco Jacobs, both located in the central part of South Africa, in Pretoria.

One thing led to the next and eventually a whole team of eager mounted archers was assembled and the Mounted Archery Association of South Africa (MAASA) was formed.
To avoid confusion in the sport, the original, non-affiliated body, SAHAA, was approached by MAASA to ensure that mutual cooperation can lead to positive growth of the sport in South Africa.
During 2016 SAHAA president, Daniel Griffin, agreed to merge with the new association (MAASA) and grow the sport together as a single team of dedicated Mounted Archers.

MAASA is currently affiliated with SAEF and is the only official mounted archery association in South Africa. Mounted Archery has since also been included in SANESA, the equestrian schools league of SA and is now a recognized equestrian school sport.
